Context

Bibeltype (Prosjekt Antikva 1.0) is a set of four typefaces specifically designed for the newly translated edition of the Book by Kjell Arild Pollestad published by Forlaget Press in autumn 2023. Developed in close collaborative with book designer Rune Døli, this project exemplifies how the mutual exchange of experiences, knowledge and preferences between type maker and user can guide the design of a hard working text typeface.

The family structure and glyph set were crafted to meet the exact hierarchical and textual requirements of the book project at hand. The Text roman sports a set of small caps for emphasis; the Italic with its wide and open shapes is designed to unobtrusively blend in with the upright; the semibold variant is carefully graded for the use in subheadings. In addition to the text styles, a more refined Display version was adapted for chapter headings and foil embossing on the book cover.

In order to withstand the hostile printing conditions of 8.5 pt body size on 32 gsm Bible paper, the text types exhibit sturdy letterforms with low contrast, strong serifs and pronounced ball terminals. A combination of symmetric and asymmetric counters results in distinct word images. The enormous x-height, short extenders as well as low capital letters ensure a clearly defined line of text and help to obtain an even typographic texture. The horizontal emphasis of the lowercase letters with its shallow arches and super-elliptic ovals are drawn to encompass subtle scaling necessary for justified typesetting.
