Context
Sperling is a Munich-based art gallery representing a handful of young, contemporary artists in the field of painting, drawing, sculpture and performance. For Sperling’s identity relaunch, frequent collaborator and award-winning graphic designer Astrid Seme joined forces with the Pyte Foundry to develop a bespoke typeface in two styles.
The typefaces were tailored to suit the envisioned usage in Sperling’s web presence, the newly initiated online-only magazine “Volumes”, printed ephemera and as well as signage within the gallery space.
Featuring some subtle, unexpected detailing, the resulting Roman and Italick styles are not shy of the occasional tick, as can be observed in the seemingly unmotivated inck traps. Despite its lucid character, the typefaces have a robust appearance to withstand on-screen text use within the online magazine as well as the website’s navigational and textual elements.
